Abstract

Background: Worldwide, thrombocytopenia poses a major risk to both the mother and the foetus. In order to
provide a framework for the provision of suitable therapies, we determined the prevalence and related acute
maternal problems of thrombocytopenia among women giving birth at Kampala International University Teaching
Hospital (KIUTH).
Methods: From May to August of 2019, 386 women participated in a prospective cross-sectional research. The
data was collected using questionnaires and laboratory result sheets. STATA version 14.2 was used for data
analysis.
Results: 15.8% of people had thrombocytopenia. Placenta abruption, which was more common in women with
thrombocytopenia (44.3%) than in those without (2.2%; p<0.001), and postpartum haemorrhage, which was more
common in women with thrombocytopenia (45.9%) than in those without (6.8%; p<0.001), were significant
immediate maternal outcomes.
Conclusions: At this hospital, thrombocytopenia is a major obstetric problem that requires special treatment.
